Hopkins girls earn share of O-K Silver Conference title

The Hopkins girls’ basketball team Friday night earned a share of the O-K Silver Conference championship with a convincing 57-28 victory Friday over Belding.

The Lady Vikings lifted their league record to 13-1, the same as perennial champ Calvin Christian, which defeated Fruitport 58-29 to keep pace. Overall, the Vikings are 16-4.

The accomplishment comes in the first year of coaching by Kennedy Helderop, who was a three-year starter for Hopkins as a point guard before she went on to play for Cornerstone University.

Claire Brenner and Kelsey Burgess led the way in the win with 10 points apiece.

Hopkins will play two interesting non-league games to close out the regular season next week on Tuesday and Thursday, against Homer and Kalamazoo Hackett, respectively. Hackett is enjoying a particularly quality season.

Wayland girls 69 Grand Rapids Union 23

The Wayland High School girls’ basketball team closed out its O-K Gold season Friday night by taking out and tripling Grand Rapids Union 69-23.

The Lady Wildcats had no difficulty in scoring their 12th victory in 18 outings overall. In league play, they are 7-5.

Marissa Ainsworth pumped in 15 points to lead Wayland’s scoring parade. Darcey Schaefer had 11 and Hayden Kena netted nine. All 11 Cats’ players who suited up broke into the scoring column.

Wayland will have two non-league contests next week Tuesday against East Grand Rapids and Thursday against East Kentwood.

Martin girls 59 Black River 19

The Lady Clippers evened their overall season record at 9-9 with the non-league victory.

They led at the period stops 18-4, 33-8 and 45-10.Q1: 18-4

“Our girls came out firing tonight and also played great defense all game,” coach Eric Zudweg said. “I was very happy with the joy and intensity we played with tonight!”

Alley Bacon lead the way with 17 points, Kayden Jager had 13 and Torryn Harris nine.

Wayland boys 71 Grand Rapids Union 61

The Wildcats finished with a flourish in the overall season, winning four of their last five games. Theyir overall record at regular season’s end is 8-14.

They will play Hamilton Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the opening round of the post-season Division 2 tournament at Allegan.
