Hopkins High School grad, coach, Fred Brewer dies at 71

Frederick C. Brewer, age 71, a Hopkins High School graduate and 40-year resident of Washington Township, died Sept. 13.

Fred was born on July 25, 1946, in Allegan Michigan, the son of Reo and Violet (Duryea) Brewer. Fred married Patricia Smith in 1972. He received his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University and his master’s degree from Saginaw Valley University. After obtaining his degree from EMU, he taught physical education at Romeo Middle School for 30 years and retired in 2003.

Fred coached boys’ and girls’ basketball for 34 years at all levels. His coaching career also included baseball and football, but basketball was his main interest. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved running, golf and camping.

Fred is survived by wife Patricia of 45 years. He is also survived by his children Steve (Jacqueline) Brewer of Macomb and Katie (Adam Blome) Brewer of Roseville. He is also survived by his brother Carroll (Pat) Brewer of Dorr, and two grandchildren.

Donations can be made to the Romeo High School Athletic Department: 11091 32 Mile Road, Romeo Michigan and are to be designated in Fred Brewer’s name.

Private services will be held.
