Hopkins High School grad Susan Smith dies at 69

Susan Ann Smith, 69 of Pullman, died Saturday, April 22, after a long battle with cancer.

Born Jan. 5, 1954, in Hastings, she was the daughter of the late Richard J. Smith and Gertrude Roberta (Cole) Smith Merbs Hitchcock. Susan graduated from Hopkins High School in 1972.  She worked at TruHeat in Allegan for years and became self-employed with rentals in the Pullman area.

Susan’s interests were fishing, taking care of injured wildlife, and she was an avid treasure hunter with her metal detector. She was skillful at hooking rugs and teaching that skill.

Her infectious laugh could be heard across the room as she played pranks on people. If she had spare time from all of her hobbies, you could find her at the casino.

Susan is survived by her five sisters, Karen (Smith) and Sam Fifelski, Robbyn (Smith) and Nick Van Frankenhuyzen, Sandy (Smith) and Carl Stanford, Teresa Smith, Nicole Merbs Weddington and Tim Garton; and many nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held after cremation.
