Hopkins, Martin gridders keep rolling; Wayland edged

The Hopkins and Martin varsity football teams Friday night both rolled to their second victories in as many attempts, but Wayland suffered a one-point loss on the gridiron.

Hopkins scored early and often in subduing visiting Parchment 42-8. The Vikings jumped out to a 16-0 advantage in the opening quarter and was enjoying a 28-8 cushion at intermission.

Martin, meanwhile, once again demonstrated its offensive prowess in stopping Marcellus, a post-season playoff qualifier last season. The final verdict was 44-14.

Senior QB Haylen Buell piled up 186 total yards and four touchdowns. Seth Toris finished with 89 yards rushing and a TD, adding 11 tackles on defense, while Isaac Suuk led the Clippers’ defense with 11 tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble.

Anderson Keeler collected eight tackles, while Hartley Branch chipped in with seven. Weson Elkins added two receptions for 45 yards a score and Buell finished with 11 tackles on defense.

Martin (2-0) hosts Holton net week.

But Wayland was edged 36-35 by a Sparta opponent that the Wildcats defeated 21-13 a year ago.

So both Hopkins and Martin are 2-0 after two weeks and Wayland is 1-1.All contests thus far have been non-league.
