Hopkins volleyball coach Amy Bishop Funk has lamented all these years about never beating her good friends in Wayland in the athletic arena.
Indeed, she has been good friends with the Ritzes and Merchants, but hasn’t managed ever to defeat them on the diamond in seven years of coaching softball.
But things were very different Monday, Nov. 3, in the opening round of the Division 2 district volleyball tournament, when first-year varsity volleyball coach Funk guided her Vikings to a three-game sweep, 25-23, 25-10 and 25-12.
However, there is a bit of bad news in that Hopkins now moves on to the district semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Wayland against perennial powerhouse Lake Odessa Lakewood.
