Hopkins Public Schools, through a grant from the Office of School Safety to allow for the addition of a School Resource Officer, will welcome and SRO March 1.

Deputy Tracey Keefauver has been selected for this position. She has worked for the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office for two years.

When asked about her new role, she stated, “I’ve enjoyed working as a road patrol deputy but I’m so excited to step into the school resource officer position. I can’t wait to work with the students and get to know them all. I’ve had extensive training to prepare me for my new role and I look forward to working with HPS making the school a safe environment for everyone!” 

The SRO will assist the district to ensure the physical safety of individuals in its schools. She will help to develop and update safety procedures, emergency operations plans and implement best practices. She will help educate students in law-related topics and provide staff with safety training as needed. 

The SRO position is partially supported by the FY23 grant funds awarded by the State of Michigan and administered by the Michigan State Police. 

Superintendent Gary Wood said the SRO will service all of the schools in the district. 

“Not only is this a great opportunity for the district, but also for the community,” Wood said. “Just think, there will be a deputy in our community every school day that can rapidly respond to emergency situations that occur.”
