The Hopkins Township Board Monday night adopted a 2018-19 fiscal year budget of more than $300,000 and has to dip into the fund balance to meet a projected shortfall.

Revenues are expected to be at $308,680 versus $356,778 in projected expenditures. The $48,158 difference will be absorbed by the fund balance, or “randy day” fund, which will be left with an estimated $824,568.

One added expense will be shared costs for a crack seal project on 24th Street with Monterey Township. Hopkins’ bill is pegged at $3,250.

The township expects to spend $164,872 in a separate budget fund in the coming year, with a remaining fund balance of $191,044.

In another matter at Monday night’s meeting, the board fielded a request from Ray Feltenbarger to do a project on 136th Avenue west from 22nd Street to 26th Street. He asked that trees be removed the road be widened and blacktopped.

Supervisor Mark Evans told him the township line extends only as far as 24th Street and the townships of Salem, Dorr and Monterey also would have to be involved.

“All four of us have to agree to do it and we have to find the money,” he said.
