A 75-year-old man who was kayaking on Monterey Lake Tuesday was drowned after his vessel overturned.

Marine deputies from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department were on the scene at about 12:30 p.m. and pulled the victim from the water, but efforts to resuscitate hime were not successful.

Lake Monterey is located in Salem Township about 10 miles west of Wayland, in the Sandy Pines area.

Authorities indicated the kayaker was not wearing a life jacket when the incident occurred.

The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of family.
