King & I: Selling old trailer an adventure

King & I: Selling old trailer an adventure

by Phyllis McCrossin

We’ve been back 12 days and today is the first day I woke up with no obligations. That’s pretty depressing for someone who retired seven years ago.

I’m also the person who has hated obligations since 1963. I dreaded going to school at the tender age of 7 because you HAD to be there and you couldn’t leave without getting into trouble.

So, today I woke up and decided it was time to organize my craft shelf. I managed to get rid of two more boxes of stuff while also looking for my jewelry box – the one that had my wedding ring in it.

It’s still missing. I’ve even been dumpster diving three times looking for a bag of trash that it might have been mixed into. There are only so many places it could be and so far it has not shown up in any of them. We scoured the Wilderness trailer before we sold it – no luck.

Now it should be mentioned that neither King nor I wore our rings that often, in fact I don’t think King knows where his is, but it’s the principle of the thing. I kind of want to know where it is.

Sigh. Let’s be realistic here. It’s in the dumpster and gone. It was not an expensive ring. We were broke college students when we got married. It’s more the sentimentality of it. Next spring marks 50 years for the two of us. Maybe we will get new rings for the next 50 years.

Probably not. But life goes on.

Yes, you read that right, we sold our Wilderness travel trailer on Friday. I listed it on Facebook marketplace. I won’t do that again. We put a low price on it. I would say our asking price was at least $4000 less than the next cheapest trailer in our area.

I was flooded with responses. It was impossible to keep track. I had one buyer who was quite insistent. She would be there in an hour, but then decided since it was so late in the day she would be there first thing in the morning. I told her I had someone coming in the morning and if it didn’t sell, I would let her know.

She hounded me all morning, when the first prospective buyer was a no-show I sent her a text and said it was available and I would hold it for her until she got there. Her response was, “I have to ask my husband.”

Nope, not playing that game.

The next person who messaged me said he definitely wanted it. He was in Goshen, Ind. A few minutes later, and I don’t know how this happened, I got a voice mail from the gentleman, who was actually conversing with a friend and asking the friend to go get the trailer. I’ve probably done hair-brained things like that as well.

He called me later and said some friends were on their way. I told him not to freak out if he saw the listing marked as “sold,” I was holding it for him.

They showed up an hour and a half later (Goshen is a long way from South Haven), looked at it and made an offer. I told King I would accept anything over $10 because I was done with Facebook Marketplace.

In the end, I think we actually did get a good price for it.

I was working in the campground store when they arrived and purchased it. I have to admit, it was kind of sad to watch our home of the past five years roll out the driveway

I hope our new(er) trailer brings as many fond memories.

Stay happy. Be nice. Enjoy life.
