Lady ‘Cats take out East GR on Senior Night

The Wayland girls’ varsity basketball team stepped outside of O-K Gold Conference play Tuesday evening and turned back East Grand Rapids 44-35.

The victory on Senior Night lifted the Lady Wildcats’ overall season record to 13-6.

Addie Sikorski paced the offensive attack with 13 points and Marissa Ainsworth added 10. Both earlier this week were announced as selectees for the All-OK-Gold Conference team. Wayland finished tied for third place with Wyoming in the final league standings with a record of 7-5. South Christian was undefeated champ at 12-0 and West Catholic was runner-up at 8-4.

Wayland will play another non-league contest Thursday evening at East Kentwood to close out its regular season. The ‘Cats will open district tournament play at South Christian’s complex with a semifinal contest against the winner of an opening round Monday matchup between Holland Christian and Grand River Prep. The Wildcats defeated Holland Christian last December 51-44.

Martin girls 47 Gobles 42

The Lady Clippers scored a big win Tuesday night, avenging a 38-32 loss from Feb. 16 and defeating an opponent which entered the contest with a 13-6 record overall

“Our girls showed a lot of toughness and grit tonight,” ciach Eric Zudweg said. “Gobles is a really good team and they came out firing and got off to a 16-6 lead on us, but our girls battled and cut the lead to one at halftime. We played composed at the end of the game and made some big free throws and shots down the stretch to help us hold them off.”

Alley Bacon had 14 points and 4 rebounds, Torryn Harris had 11 points and 6 rebounds, Kayden Jager had 10 points and 6 rebounds and Maggie Jager had 6 points and 10 rebounds.

Martin, now with a record of 10-9 overall, will take on Battle Creek St. Phillip Thursday evening and then interestingly will play the Tigers again next week on Wednesday in the District 4 semifinal round.

Hopkins girls 48 Homer 39

The Lady Vikings got the best of the visiting Trojans in an unusual matchup for both teams. Hopkins, now 17-4 for the season overall, now will face a huge challenge Thursday with a regular-season ending contest with Kalamazoo Hackett, which has been enjoying a terrific season on their own at 18-3.

The Vikings will play in the district tournament at Hamilton Wednesday, March 4,against South Haven.
