The Martin girls’ varsity cross-country team has won one meet and finished second in another thus far this season.

The Lady Clippers took first in the Jim Carey Early Bird Invitational at Lawrence Friday, Aug. 16.

Sophomore distance running sensation Veyda Conley was medalist with a time of 21:03.4 on the five-kilometer course. She was supported by strong performances by teammates Emily King and Sara Schipper, who checked in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Allison Rodgers and Kayden Jager rounded out the scoring, both finishing among the top 10.

The Clipper boys had to settle for third among three teams in the meet, even though senior ace Alex Morin finished sixth in 19:49.9.

Conley was runner-up to Gull Lake’s Lane Isom with a 21:43.3 in a double dual at the Gilmore Car Museum that included Delton and Gull Lake Aug. 20. Emily King was 11th, Sara Schipper 15th, Kayden Jager 16th and Allison Rodgers 17th.

The Clipper boys edged Delton for second place. Morin led the way in eighth place, Jaydon Dettman14th, Jeremiah VanHouten 17thHunter Hayes 19th and Nicolas Anguiano-Cruz 22nd.

Martin will compete next in the Kalamazoo Invitational Wednesday.
