Lady Viking softball team wins season opener 11-1

The Hopkins softball team earlier this week opened its season with an 11-1 victory over Holland Christian. The game was halted in the sixth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Kelsea Burgess-collected three hits, one double, and had one RBI. Calleigh Washburn had one hit, one. RBI  Madi Veldheer came up with two stolen bases, one hit, one RBI, one double and seven putouts catching. Leah Williams had two hits, including a double. 

Freshman Jorja Wood’s one hit was a two-run homer to the center field fence. She had two RBIs and pitched one inning throwing three strikeouts, zero walks, zero earned runs, zero hits, and seven putouts at first base.

Gracie Stallard tossed a one-hitter over five inning. striking out four batters, yielding two walks and zero earned runs 

The Vikings this year are welcoming back veteran coach Casey Schoenborn, who succeeds Amy Funk, who retired at the end of last season, but has taken over thye Hopkins volleyball program. The Lady Viking had a 19-15 overall record last year.

In assessing her team she listed returning players – senior infielder Kelsey Burgess, senior infielder outfielder Calleigh Washburn, junior catcher-infielder Maddie Veldheer, junior pitcher and infielder Gracie Stallard and sophomore utility player McKenna Funk.

Promising newcomers are junior infielder Leah Williams, freshman pitcher and infielder Jorja Wood.

“We have a great group of players who are willing to learn.,” the coach said. “We are going to be competitive and we have tons of potential.”
