Lady Vikings coach’s debut is hugely successful

Coach Amy Funk

The Hopkins varsity volleyball team welcomed new coach Amy Bishop Funk Saturday by winning the Lawton tournament with six victories without a loss.

Though it was Funk’s first varsity volleyball game, she is no stranger to Hopkins, having stepped down last spring after seven years coaching varsity softball. She was junior varsity volleyball coach a year ago.

The Lady Vikings reeled off six victories, all in straight sets. They beat Parchment 21-6, 21-11, Saugatuck 21-13, 21-9, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 21-7, 21-5. Berrien Springs 21-12, 21-6, Gobles 21-11 and Bridgman 21-11 and 21-14

Individually, the top kills were recorded by senior Kelsey Burgess with 22, junior Leah Williams with 15, freshman Taylie Burgess with 14, senior Reid Groenhout with 13, and junior Kally Bishop with 12.

Senior Kylee Stykes led the team with 72 assists overall. Senior Reid Groenhout led the team with five blocks with junior Kally Bishop added four.

“This is all after a tough week of tryouts,” Funk said.”Probably my roughest of my coaching career. We had 52 girls tryout for our three teams (varsity, jayvee and frosh). I am very happy to have a win like this with a team that I created.”

So, Hopkins begins the 2025 volleyball season with a 6-0 overall record.
