Lady Vikings show they can run with the bigger dogs

Everybody knows that Hopkins and Calvin Christian are the class of the O-K Silver Conference in girls’ basketball, but can they run with the bigger dogs in Division 2?

The Lady Vikings answered yes Wednesday night when they took on a larger opponent in Plainwell that sports a 13-5 overall record. They fell short by three points, 61-58, but took the Trojans into overtime before finally absorbing the loss.

It was the first time Hopkins tasted defeat in the last 13 outings, since bowing to Calvin Christian in the first week of January. They won 12 in a row after starting the season at 3-3.

Kelsey Burgess hit a buzzer beater at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. Cora Hall led with 18 points and Claire Brenner followed right behind with a new career high of 17 points.

Hopkins will play at Belding Friday night in its last league game of the season. If it wins, it will gain at least a share of the O-K Silver crown with Calvin Christian. The team is 12-1 in the Silver and 15-4 overall.
