The Wayland High School girls’ varsity basketball team Tuesday evening came up with perhaps its most significant victory of the young season with a 54-39 decision over Wyoming.
The visiting Wolves won all of their first six contests, including a 54-51 decision over Hudsonville, and had only absorbed their first loss Saturday to Coopersville.
But the one-two, inside-outside punch of Addie Sikorski and Marissa Ainsworth was too much for Wyoming. Sikorski scored 24 points and Ainsworth 13 for 37 of the Wildcats’ 54 points.
Ainsworth drilled a couple of three-point field goals and Jordan Grevenstuk added another.
The triumph lifted Wayland’s overall season record to 6-0, and showdowns with Caledonia at home loom Friday and with state-ranked South Christian next Tuesday. The Sailors are coming off a big victory over West Catholic and enjoys the No. 1 ranking in the state in Division 2.

The Lady Vikings started strong in the season with victories in their first three encounters, but have lost three since then. They dropped a hard-fought battle with the Squires, O-K Silver Conference rivals. They also lost in double overtime Saturday in a 63-58 non-league contest with Zeeland West.
