The Wayland and Hopkins cross-country teams participated Friday morning in the first-ever Hokum Karem at the Jijak camp in Hopkins Township owned by the Gun Lake Tribe.
The Lady Wildcats earned the runner-up slot in the team competition and top runners Madison Bumhoffer and Ashlee VandenBrink finished first as a two-person team.
Coach Nikki Hoogewind said, “The meet today was a different style race for our runners…Abree had an excellent start and gave a nice lead for Maddie, who held the lead and they both kept that lead going the entire race.”
The coach also had kind words about the efforts of Ryleigh Haveman, Sophia Miller and Marissa and Ashlee with “tough, fast paced repeat miles. Such good effort!”
