Lady Wildcats have no trouble subduing GR Union

Addi Sikorski

The Wayland girls’ basketball team finally ended idleness Wednesday evening with a 63-20 victory over Grand Rapids Union.

The Lady Wildcats had been sidelined by inclement weather for almost two weeks, but finally got back on the hardcourt to claim their eighth triumph of the season in nine tries overall, Wayland is 4-1 in the O-K Gold Conference, still trailing state-ranked South Christian by a game in the standings.

It was no contest from the get-go Wednesday evening.

Addie Sikorski dropped in 18 points and Jordan Grevenstuck chipped in 15, including a couple of three-point field goals.

The Lady Wildcats will return to the hardcourt, weather permitting, at GR Northview High School on Friday evening.

Hopkins girls 59 Comstock Park 29

The Lady Vikings recorded their fourth consecutive victory Monday and lifted their O-K Silver Conference record to 5-1. Their only loss in league play was to first place Grandville Calvin Christian, 64-57.

Hopkins, like so many other area schools, has battled idleness because of the snowy and icy weather. Coach Kennedy Helderop’s outfit will try to get back in action Friday at NorthPointe Christian.

Martin girls 39 Watervliet 35

The Lady Clippers made a long trip to Watervliet and came away with a close victory to move their overall record to 6-3.

Though the final score was close, the Lady Clippers led at the four period stops, 9-7, 22-15, 28-21 and 39-35.

Coach Eric Zudweg said Martin had a balanced attack, led by Kayden Jager and Aliyah DeGlopper with 8 points each, Anna Jager and Torryn Harris had 6 points each and Alley Bacon had 5.

“It was a very hard fought game by both teams tonight,” Zudweg said. “We did not have our shot going tonight, but played scrappy and held on to a right victory over a tough opponent in Watervliet. We had very balanced scoring with all seven girls that played scoring by halftime. Defense leads us, and I thought the girls played well tonight on that end of the floor.”
