Lady Wildcats remain unbeaten by defeating Hopkins

The Wayland High School girls’ basketball squad kept its spotless overall record intact Wednesday evening by turning back neighborhood rival Hopkins, 56-31.

The Lady Wildcats were slowed in the first half by foul troubles for Addi Sikorski, Marissa Ainsworth and Jordan Grevenstuk. This led to the visiting Lady Vikings to shoot a whopping 22 free throws in just the first half.

But Wayland slowly but surely righted its mission and pulled away.

It was only the first loss for Hopkins, now under the leadership of coach Kennedy Helderop.

Senior Laney Wolf led the Wildcats in scoring with 13 points. However, Sikorski was held to just seven points after tallying 30 the night before, and Ainsworth also was limited to seven points after posting 20 on Tuesday night.

Wayland is now 3-0 and will face Holland Christian Friday night. Hopkins is now 3-1 overall and will take a break until Jan. 3, when it will take on Zeeland West in a matinee at 3 p.m.
