Larry Van Volkinburg, age 88, died Monday, January 24.

Larry served his country in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He was born in Cadillac, and later moved to the Wayland area in his teens and built his family homes and lived here for the rest of his life. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and hobby farming. He was very active in the church and his church community.

He is survived by his second wife of 19 years, Yvonne Van Volkinburg; children Billy (Nancy) Gifford, Doreen Redding, Susan (Steven) DeKoekkoek, Shirley Van Volkinburg, Tammy Chaney; stepson, Brad (Sarah) McCord; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and siblings Duane, Doris, Joan, and Jack.

He was preceded in death by his parents Fern and Vena Van Volkinburg; his first wife of 42 years, Dora Van Volkinburg; and siblings DonnaBell, Keith, Donald, Ronald, Vena Mae and Freeda.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at Kubiak-Cook, Wayland Chapel, 312 N. Main St. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at Unity Baptist Church, 3514 12th St., Wayland, with visitation one hour prior to the service.

In memory of Larry and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
