The Wayland Chamber of Commerce announced today that the annual Christmas parade has had to be canceled this year because of the threat of the Coronavirus.
The event was scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5. The Art Hop planned for 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, also will not be held because of the Covid-19 thtreat.
The Chamber posted an official letter that read:
“It is with regret that we inform you of the cancellation of the 2020 Wayland Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Christmas Parade.
“After much discussion amongst the chamber board, as well as consulting with the city, law enforcement and the county health department, it is clear that going forth with the parade during a pandemic was not in the best interest of the community. It breaks our hearts to announce this but we must do our part to keep the spread minimized.
“Though the parade will not take place, we are excited to announce that Santa Claus is still working diligently in our area. Please stay tuned to our Facebook page or website for further Santa information.
“We hope everyone will remain diligent during this crisis. We urge you to support our local businesses and stay chamber strong!”

Dennis Reno and I co-chaired the first Christmas Parade 53 years ago. This is the only year it had to be canceled. The Chamber of Commerce made the right call. Peace to all.
