Faith Guritz (35) vies for the game-opening tip with Lawton’s Kylie Gibson (24).

The Martin girls’ varsity basketball team absorbed its first defeat of the season Tuesday, 52-42, at the hands of SAC rival Lawton.

The Lady Clippers just couldn’t keep up and were at a deficit for almost the entire game. Another slow start plagued Martin’s girls, Faith Guritz scored their only hoop in the first quarter putting the Clippers behind 9 to 2. At the opening of the second, Jaclyn Hildebrand sprang into action to rung up five quick points. Guritz also was able to drop 8 points in before intermission.

At halftime, Lawton led 23-17 and things were starting to look promising for Martin. That glimmer of hope soon faded as the fourth quarter rolled around and Lawton mustered the effort to have a 10 point lead throughout, until the final score.

Faith Guritz ended up leading the Clippers in points with 23 points contributed and Alissa Waite led the Blue Devils with 14. Hildebrand added eight and Kiaya Warner had six.

The Lady Clippers, now 2-1, will be host to Watervliet in another SAC Divisional encounter on Friday night.
