Supervisor Steve Deer and Trustee John Hooker will represent the Leighton Township Board on a special subcommittee that will attempt to clarify and solidify agreements between the township and the district library.

The Library Board is expected to appoint its representatives later this month.

The two entities have a long-standing contract, but physical conditions have changed now that they both occupy the same building. The township had its new hall constructed adjacent to the library, which has stood for 18 years.

One economic issue that has remained a bit sticky is payment for installation of fire suppression, or sprinklers, which cost a total of about $71,000. The township said it had to have the sprinklers installed to meet building code regulations and the library benefits from the equipment as well.

However, it could be argued that the library didn’t have to have the sprinklers and it is only because the township decided to move in next door that the expense has been incurred.

Township officials have asked for 40 percent contribution from the libary, which has counter offered 10 percent.

Deer said the library operates with one mill, which is more than the township does, and the sprinkler installation there was a retrofit and therefore more expensive.

But, he added, “They’re good folks and they run a good library. We’re just far apart on this issue.”

Treasurer Char Troost said the township owns the entire building and it has paid for the library’s audit.

“They have to remember we took on all the expenses and it’s a benefit for them, too.”
