Longtime Dorr Fourth of July Parade Chairman Robert Walter York died in Hastings Sunday, March 17, of a long-time illness.

Robert lived an accomplished life serving his country and community in many ways, including in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, acting chairman of the Dorr 4th of July Parade for many years, and becoming a lifetime member and commander of the Otsego VFW Post 3030.

Robert was a skilled carpenter and lover of the simple life, enjoying fishing, camping, warm beer and strolling the flea markets. While Robert was proud to be a Korean War Veteran and community leader, nothing made him more proud than the family he loved.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Stevenson; daughter, Fawn (Chuck) Kimmel; son, Thomas York;  grandkids Ryan (Tiffany) Kimmel, Katie (Eric) DeWinter, Abbie Kimmel, Haleigh York, Ethan York and Nolan York, Zia (Erica) Shook and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara; daughter, Robyn; son, Mark; and son-in-law, David Beem.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21, at Carlisle United Methodist Church, 1084 76th St. SW, Byron Center. Relatives and friends may meet Robert’s family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home, 4330 18th St., Dorr, as well as one hour prior to the service
