Longtime area special needs activist Delores DeWeerd dies

Delores J. DeWeerd, age 88, died Saturday, June 8.

Delores was involved for a long time with the Allegan Special Needs Program – formerly Precious Acres.  She also enjoyed crocheting, crafting, cooking, reading, crossword puzzles and word searches. She was the longtime wife of local veterinarian Dr. Kenneth DeWeerd.

Delores is survived by her children, Ken DeWeerd, Marijane DeWeerd, Wayne DeWeerd; her grandchildren, Lindsay (William) Beattie, Nicholas Oglesbee, Tyler DeWeerd, Trevor DeWeerd; her great-grandchildren Landon and Nolan Beattie; and her brother, Charles “Roger” (LouAnne) DeHaven.

She was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Martha DeHaven.

Delores’ family will gather for a graveside service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 12,, at Elmwood Cemetery in Wayland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Edge AFC, a community placement home for severely developmentally disabled women, where Marijane resides (PO Box 377, Plainwell, MI 49080).
