A $10 million bond was set Monday in Barry County District Court for a Gun Lake area man who is accused to killing two men Friday and attempting to strangle his wife.

Jon Otis Burnett, 63, was arraigned on charges of two counts of open murder, a count of assault with a dangerous weapon, a count of assault by strangulation and four counts of felony firearm.

Authorities say Burnett killed 21-year-old Bryce DeGood of Haslett and 73-year-old Gary Peake of Plainwell Friday afternoon. Peake, Burnett’s neighbor, was found dead of gunshot wounds in a home near Lindsey and Lewis roads in rural Orangeville Township. DeGood’s body was found in a ditch alongside the road.

Witnesses said Burnett witnesses brandished a pink when he was arrested by Barry County Sheriff’s deputies.

Prosecutors also said Burnett attacked his wife before the murders, attempting to strangle her.

He is expected back in court for a probable cause conference Wednesday, July 3.
