Dale Alan Whittredge, 49, of Shelbyville, was sentenced earlier this week on charges of attempted embezzlement of more than $30,000 from the Christian Neighbors food pantry in Wayland.

Whittredge, a former volunteer, was sentenced in Allegan County Circuit Court to jail and probation. He submitted a check for $30,586.02, which was given to the charity at the court hearing Monday, Oct. 30.

He pleaded to a reduced charge from embezzlement to attempted embezzlement when restitution was made.

Whittredge’s attorney asked he receive a jail sentence that would permit him to continue working.

Circuit Judge Margaret Bakker sentenced Whittredge to two years probation and 180 days in jail, but he was allowed to serve his jail time on weekends and must do 80 hours of community service.

Wayland Christian Neighbors has changed procedures to assure donated money is safe in the future.
