A 37-year-old man with a medical issue somehow was able to shut down traffic on the U.S.-131 expressway for several hours at the 50-mile marker near the Plainwell/Otsego exit Sunday evening.

Deputies from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Otsego Police Department and Plainwell Department of Public Safety responded to a call regarding the subject and negotiated with the subject. Allegan County crisis negotiators spoke to the man,who is now receiving treatment at a local hospital.

U.S.-131 reopened shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday.

The Sheriff’s office was assisted by the Plainwell Department of Public Safety, Otsego Police Department, Gun Plain Fire Department, Martin Fire & Rescue, Plainwell Area EMS, and the Michigan Department of Transportation in resolving this incident.
