Leighton Township Fire Chief Matt Weston told the Township Board Thursday night these are strange times indeed for firefighters.
Presenting his monthly report via the telephone, he said of March, “It was a totally different month than any others I’ve experienced in my 20 years (as a firefighter).”
Weston acknowledged the department has responded to “a few” Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases.
“We donned the appropriate PPE (personal protection equipment) before entering the residence to limit the exposure for our personnel and for the patient,” he said.
Weston said the department handled only 13 calls in March and now has 60 for the year thus far.
In other business in a conference call-style meeting, the board:
- Was told at least one representative from the Leighton Library Board will be in contact to discuss plans for an addition to the building, which houses the library and the township. The potential insurer wants the township to sign for any agreement for work on an addition.
- Accepted the bid of $344,000 from Superior Asphalt for this year’s paving project on 144th Avenue, as recommended by the Allegan County Road Commission.
- Agreed to drop a demand for deeper water and sewer installation for the Classic Transportation warehouse on 147th Avenue, as long as it’s six feet under.
- Approved the appointment of Annie Schreur to the position of deputy treasurer.
- Was told the special citizens’ road committee has been unable to meet for the last five weeks for obvious reasons.
