Martin falls to 9-1 Saugatuck; ‘Cats turn back upset bid

The Martin girls’ basketball team Friday night lost 53-39 to a very good Saugatuck outfit that improved its overall record to 9-1 overall and 5-0 in the SAC.

The Trailblazers led throughout the ballgame, 19-11, 30-17 and 44-28 at the period stops.

“Saugatuck played well, Laskowski (16 points) and Simpson 14 points) had great nights for them and as always are really tough,” said coach Eric Zudweg. “We had a rough finish at the end of the first quarter and it put us in a hole we couldn’t get out of. I thought our girls played hard all four quarters.”

The Lady Clippers were led by Anna Jager with 16 points and Aliyah DeGlopper with 8 points.

The loss dropped the Lady Clippers’ season record to 6-4.

The youngest of the legendary Laker sisters made a huge impact at the right time to foil a surprising upset bid by Northview.

Charity Laker, a sophomore, swished several critical free throws down the stretch and enabled the Lady Wildcats to escape with a victory in overtime. She sank three of her last four attempts in the extra session to seal the triumph.

Wayland was plagued by foul trouble in the first half and Northview was able to match the visiting ‘Cats at the end of the regulation time.

Marissa Ainsworth led the offensive attack with 16 points, Addie Sikorski had 14 and Charity Laker eight. Ainsworth canned a couple of threes and Jordan Grevenstuk had one.

The victory lifted Wayland’s overall record to 9-1 and 4-1 in the O-K Gold Conference. The Wildcats still trail undefeated South Christian and West Catholic in the drive for the league title.

Northview was seeking its first league victory in five outings and left the court with an overall record of 1-9.

The Clippers were successful in pulling out thriller on the Trailblazers’ floor. Their rercord improved to 4-10 overall.

Northview, one of the top teams in the O-K Gold Conference, dispatched the visting Wildcats will little difficulty. Wayland boys now have lost nine in a row after winning their first three games of the season.

Northpointe Christian boys 53 Hopkins 14

The Viking guys’ overall season record sank to 1-11 with the loss. Hopkins boys and girls will have a makeup contest Saturday afternoon against Belding and four Vikings will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
