
The Martin girls’ cross-country team placed ninth in the Division 4 state championship meet Saturday morning at Michigan International Speedway near Brooklyn.
The Lady Clippers totaled 302 points, edging 10th place Petoskey by one point. Whitmore Lake emerged as state champion with 140 points and Southwestern Athletic Conference rival Gobles was seventh with 244. The Tigers’ junior star Libby Smith was state runner-up in 18:36.10.
Junior ace harrier Veyda Conley finished in sixth place among individual runners with a time of 19:12.20. Her personal best time in the 5,000-meter race is 19:03.
Martin sophomore Allison Rodgers finished 66th in 21:14.8, sophomore DuRae Sage was 98th, freshman Riley Bender was 120th with her personal best time and junior Sara Schipper was 140th.
The official scoring placements, eliminating runners who were not affiliated with a team, for Martin was fifth, 46th, 69th, 85th and 97th.
There were 238 runners in the race from all over Michigan.
