Martin opens cross season in meet at Lawrence

The Martin High School girls’ cross-country season got under way Friday with the Clippers winning a 25-32 decision over Hartford in the Jim Carey Early Bird event at Lawrence.

The Martin boys finished third behind Delton Kellogg and Hartford with 60 points.

Martin girls’ ace Veyda Conley, a junior who qualified for the Division 4 state meet in her freshman and sophomore seasons, led all female harriers with a five-kilometer time of 21:05.2. The Clippers fielded enough female runners to record a team score. Sophomore Allison Rodgers led the way, finishing sixth with a 5K time of 25:09.8. Junior Sara Schipper was seventh, freshman Riley Bender was 10th, sophomore DuRae Sage was 11th and junior Kayden Jager 21st.

Junior Jadon Dettman led the Martin guys by finishing eighth with a time of 19:50.4, followed by freshman Lance Kaylor, sophomore Jeremiah VanHouten, and freshmen Logan TenBrink and Xander Ruiter.
