The Martin Board of Education Monday evening decided to raise the goal for a minimum general budget fund balance to 20%.The previous goal was 15%.
Trustee Chuck Oxsender said he thought it was a “great idea” to raise the goal. He saidit was, “important to have funds for a rainy day, which just happened.”
The “rainy day” Oxsender was referring to was the tornado that went through Martin on May 15. The storm damaged school property, which the district since has been working to get repaired.
The district has to date been reimbursed from its insurance company to the tune of $140,000. Superintendent Samantha Ball told the board that it will probably be more because the insurance claim is still open.
In other matters Monday, the board:
- Noted Martin’s school athletic teams are having tremendous fall season. It has been highlighted with impressive results from the cross country and volleyball teams. he high school football team will be playing Friday for an undefeated seson. It will be the Clippers’ last regular season game before they host a playoff game on Friday evening, Oct. 31.
- The marching band is also having an amazing season, earning first place in Class D in the Grandville Invitational and third place overall this past weekend at the East Kentwood invitational. Director is Noah Miller.
- The board will survey the progress of the renovations approved by the bond measure. The renovations for additional band storage and practice rooms, kitchen improvements and an expansion of the cafeteria will be surveyed by the board before the Nov. 17 meeting.
