Martin Township Board approves road paving projects

The Martin Township Board Wednesday evening approved paving projects for portions of Fifth Street, Third Street and Eleventh Street for a combined cost of $147,349.

The money to pay for the project will be taken out of the road funding in the budget for fiscal year 2017-18. The contractor will be Reith-Reilly. Fifth Street will get about a mile of work, Third Street will get about a quarter of a mile and 11th Street will get .17 of a mile.

The Township Board also gave final approval for application of calcium chloride for dust control and graveling. Added was what is believed to be shared costs, at about $9,000, with Watson Township for 12th Street.

In other business Wednesday, the Township Board:

• Received a request from citizen Dan Reed, who want to purchase land on the backside of South Cemetery. Trustee Jack Sipple estimated that it could total six to seven acres.

Township officials tabled the matter and invited Reed to come to next month’s regular meeting May 10. Reed owns property that abuts the cemetery. Officials indicated they aren’t sure if there is a need for cemetery expansion, so a little more research is expected.

• Announced the annual Trash Day collection will be on Saturday, May 20. The township expects to order at least four dumpsters to collect residents’ refuse.

• Accepted the bid of CNC Lawn Care for mowing and landscaping all township properties this spring and summer and early fall. Cost was set at $15,500.

• Decided to send to an attorney the proposed cost recovery ordinance modeled on that of South Haven. Treasurer Sue Tiemeyer said she has misgivings about making residents pay when firefighters respond to their call, besides paying a fire millage, but colleagues told her insurance almost always picks up the tab.

• Learned from Trustee Jim Brenner, the board’s representative on the Planning Commission, that there may be a special meeting Tuesday, May 16, to discuss a proposal to mine gravel on a property now zo0ned R-1 (residential).
