Martin Township welcomes new Treasurer Maria Leep

Maria Leep Wednesday evening attended her first Martin Township Board meeting as the township’s new treasurer.

Leep, only a shirt-tail relative of Supervisor Glenn Lee, was appointed last month to succeed the retiring Sue Tiemeyer.

The supervisor announced that, “Her father-in-law is my cousin.”

The new treasurer is a graduate of Grand Valley State University. She has worked in Allegan County adult and child protective services since earning her degree.

She and her husband moved to Martin Township seven years ago.

Allegan County Commissioner Gale Duggan, a regular at township meetings, thanked Lee for her services to the county and expressed optimism that her services will be valued in Martin Township as well.

In other business at Wednesday’s meeting, the Township Board:

  • Scheduled the annual budget workshop for Wednesday, May 27, at 6:30 p.m. The fiscal year for Martin Township runs from July 1 to June 30.
  • Granted the low bid of $3,300 to Stoney Point for removal of trees andcleanup in East Cemetery.
  • Was told by Supervisor Lee that the application for a Michigan Department of Natural Resources recreation grant has been sent, “So now, it’s a waiting game, according to the supervisor. The township wants to use the grant to build a park between the Clippers Cafe and JC Wheeler Library, including a splash pad.
