The Martin Township Board plansWheeler Library sign to interview three finalists for the job of township assessor in a special meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22.

The person selected will succeed Sherry Burd, formerly of Plainwell, who had been paid $1545 a month for her services, but has moved to the Upper Peninsula to take a new job. Martin officials briefly held out hope they could work out an arrangement with Burd to do most of her work on line from a distance and occasionally drive to this area for personal appearances, but two of her other clients, Comstock and Alamo townships, began seeking her successor.

Township officials said they have been impressed with the work of Burd, who has been assessor in Martin for the last 10 years. They plan to consult with her during the process of interviewing and hiring.

The three finalists are Joshua Simmons, asseesor for Valley and Lee townships, among others; Rosemary Anger of Hastings, who works in the Barry County Equalization office, and Kyle W. Harris, who is assessor for the City of Fennville, among other municipalties.

This art work shows what library officials would like the sign to look like. The Martin Township Board authorized the library to spend up to $2,500, and about $2,100 already has been expended.
