Martin wins volleyball season dual match opener

The Martin High School volleyball team is off to a decent start this year with dual match victory and a fourth-place finish in a tournament.

The Clippers started their campaign Friday Aug. 22, at Fremont for their ‘first dig’ tournament.

Coach Shannon Goddard said, “We played against much larger schools and came away with a fourth place finish out of nine schools. A very successful first outing for our team!”

Martin’s first dual match was against Tri-Unity Christian Tuesday Aug. 26, when the Clippers won in four sets.

“We played really well the first two sets, let off the gas a little too much in the third, but finished it in the fourth, winning 25-15, 25-16, 19-25 and 25-15.

“Our serving was great, only missing a handful the whole match as a team,” the coach said.

Torryn Harris and Mackenzie Schwartz both went perfect on the day in serving. Kendra Goddard led the team with 17 digs. Torryn had 22 assists with Mackenzie grabbing 8 kills. Maggie Jager and Anna Jager both had six kills.

“It’s so important for us to have a balanced attack,” the coach said. “If someone is having an off day, we have lots of other options.

The Clippers play Tuesday (Comstock quad), Thursday (Lawton) and Saturday at the Ottawa Hills tournament.
