Howard L. (Skip) Stephans died Friday, Jan. 10, at the age of 70.

“Skip,” as he was known, was born to Howard and Bettey (Broder) Stephans on July 10, 1949, in Allegan. He was a graduate of Hopkins High School and worked most of his life in the automotive industry. He traveled the state of Michigan in sales early in his career.

He owned and operated The Auto Shack, parts and service on Burton Street, Wyoming, for many years. He also worked as service advisor at Good GMC on Clyde Park, Wyoming, and Veenstra’s Garage on Fulton Street in Grand Rapids. Skip was known for his expertise in all things automotive and his excellent customer service. Skip built a loyal clientele and formed many friendships throughout his career.

An avid sports fan, he enjoyed attending the Daytona 500, baseball, football and most anything to do with sports. Attending the grandchildren’s games was his joy after retirement. He’d always bring refreshments for family and friends and always had wise words of advice along with a quick wit.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Stephans; children Valerie (Roger) Lam, Brett Stephans, Mark (Wendy) Stephens, and Matthew (Shanda) Stephens; grandchildren Ashtin and Shane, Matthew Jr., Leanne, Vandel, Shannon, Austin (Joanna), Dylan, and Seth; great-grandson, Jameson; siblings Linda (Mel) Stoepker, Diane (Larry) Reed, Denise (Tim) Connor, and Betty Gensler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Stanley (Gene) Stephans; sister, Bonnie Funk; and brothers-in-law Gary Funk and Mike Gensler.

Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Kubiak Cook Funeral Home, 4330 – 18th St., Dorr, with a vigil beginning at 5 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15,  at St. Mary’s Visitation Catholic Church, 2459 – 146th Ave. SW, Byron Center.  Father Christopher Derda will be officiating.

In honor of Skip, and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Faith Hospice.
