Memorial Day ceremonies, activities planned for Monday

Memorial Day observances are scheduled for Monday, May 29, in many local communities.

The following is a brief sketch of activities and ceremonies planned:

  • • Wayland — A bus will depart for cemetery honors at 7:45 a.m. from the Wayland VFW. The schedule includes 8:30 a.m. at Hooker Cemetery, 9 a.m. at Native American Cemetery, 9:25 a.m. at Germond Cemetery, 9:45 a.m. at St. Cyril & Methodius, 10 a.m. at Hill Cemetery and 10:20 a.m. at Elmwood.  The parade will start at 11 a.m. at the Michigan State Police Post and conclude at Wayland VFW Post 7581 on South Main. Those driving trucks, big rigs and other vehicles are asked not to use sirens and horns out of respect for the veterans. After the parade, the public is invited to the VFW for pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans and coleslaw. Cost is $6 per person, cash or checks only.   Veterans are needed for cemetery honors and parade participation. Call the Wayland VFW Post 7581 at 269-792-2975.
  • Hopkins Township will have its service at 10 a.m. at Maplewood Cemetery, corner of 17th Street and 130th Avenue. The service will include the Wayland VFW, Sons of the Union Civil War Veterans, Hopkins Scouts, Hopkins Band, Hopkins FFA, and a guest speaker, Sgt. 1st Class (retired) Shawn Stenberg, United States Army.
  • In Dorr, the rifle squadron of American Legion Post 127 will honor deceased veterans at various local cemeteries at 8 a.m. at Post 127, 8:30 a.m. at St. Stanislaus, 9:15 a.m. at Richter Cemetery, 10 a.m. at Dorr, 10:45 a.m. at Jones and 11:30 a.m. at Sproat.
  • Dorr American Legion Post 127, 4310 18th St., will be open to the public at noon, with a pork barbeque sandwich or chicken dinner; horseshoe tournament with a beer tent, bingo until 4:30 p.m., crafts and games for kids, plus raffle and prize drawings throughout the day. Dorr American Legion also will shoot a salute at North Park Veterans Monuments at 12:00 noon.
  • Salem Township will hold Memorial Day ceremonies at three cemeteries at 10:30 a.m. at Burnips in Salem Township, 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s in New Salem and 11:30 a.m. at Visitation Cemetery in North Dorr.
  • Monterey Township will have its Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. at Poplar Hill Cemetery on 30th Street.
  • Village of Martin will be host for its annual parade at 10 a.m., with lineup at 9:30 a.m. in front of Martin High School, 1556 Chalmers St. The parade will end at Geib Memorial Park. The ceremony will begin at the park after the parade, approximately 11 a.m. During the Martin ceremony, local veterans will present flags to the families of Bob Kelsey, Carl Levett and Verl Scott. Also participating will be the high school band, the fire department, church groups, Boy Scouts, and the Martins Lions Club.

    Hi David,
    Dorr American Legion Hall Post 127, will also shoot at North Park Veterans Monuments at 12:00 noon. Monday.
