UPDATE: It was reported Thursday that blinking traffic lights have been installed at the intersection.

Troopers with the Wayland post of the Michigan State Police said they don’t know why a Middleville man driving a truck didn’t stop at the intersection of 4th Street and 135th Avenue before a traffic crash that killed him Tuesday evening.

Chad Grayling Cole, 58, was driving south on 4th Street, also known as Kalamazoo Avenue in Wayland Township, when his pickup truck was struck by a Ford Taurus driven west on 135th Avenue by a 45-year-old woman. Cole was alone in the truck and died at the scene.

The other driver only had minor injuries, police say.

Troopers say there were no drugs or alcohol involved in the crash and neither motorist was speeding.

Local citizens for some time now have suggested the intersection is dangerous and should have flashing red lights installed there, just like at Kalamazoo Avenue and 142nd Avenue in Leighton Township.
