Monterey Township traffic crash takes lives of 2 men

A traffic crash in Monterey Township Monday left two men dead, troopers from the Wayland post of the Michigan State Police said.

The crash occurred just before 9 a.m. on 30th Street, near 134th Avenue. Police said a car was headed east on 134th when the driver didn’t stop at a stop sign and hit a pickup truck, driven by a 43-year-old man from Allegan, traveling north on 30th.

The Allegan man was taken to the hospital, where he died. Police said he was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 19-year-old man from Grand Rapids, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and he died Tuesday morning. Police said it was unclear if he was wearing a seatbelt.

Drugs and speed may have contributed to the crash, State Police said
