New Dorr Twp. hall causing potential budget shortfall?

The Township Board took no action on putting up this sign at the new hall because of prospects for budget troubles ahead.

Dorr Township Supervisor Jeff Miling was in “I told you so” mode at Thursday night’s Township Board meeting, in the wake of news about a possible budget shortfall.

Miling was referring to the purchase last year of the former CrossWinds Church on 142nd Avenue, which has brought along more expenses.

Miling told board colleagues a review of the first quarter budget for 2025-26 showed that expenses were running higher and if the trend continues, it could have to make up a shortfall of about $100,000.

Besides having to deal with expenses in setting up shop in the new township offices, new computers will have to be purchased. He pointed out, however, that as long as the township’s savings account and revenue is more than expenses, there is no danger of not being able to balance the budget.

Another higher expense this year is Dorr Township’s costs in using two Allegan County Sheriff’s deputies for Dorr and Leighton Township law enforcement services. Dorr is expected to spend $113,454 per deputy, an increase of $9,454.55 over last year.

Dorr Township’s annual general fund budget is pegged at $4.7 million.

In other business at the meeting Thursday, the Township Board:
