004195-000011Nine artists from this area among the 1,554 artist entries from 48 countries and 42 U.S. states at 162 venues in Grand Rapids’ seventh annual ArtPrize competition.

All are competing for a combination of public vote and juried awards totaling $500,000.

More than 400,000 visited the 19-day exhibition in both of the last two years. Art Prize has beckoned nearly two million visitors since it was launched in 2009.

The public will choose winners in each of four categories—2-D, 3-D, Time-Based or Installation, with each prize worth $12,500. The grand prize winner in the public vote will bring $200,000.

On the juried side, $12,500 will go to one piece in each category. Jurors then will select four more from their categories and a three-person grand prize jury will determine the $200,000 juried grand prize.

Public voting during two rounds is done at artprize.org or through a mobile app. The first began Wednesday, Sept. 23, running through Saturday, Oct. 3. The 20 entries with the most votes go to a second round, beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, and running through Oct. 8.

Winners are then announced at the awards ceremony at 8 p.m Friday, Oct. 9. The exhibition will close Sunday, Oct. 11.
