Driver in fatal crash with Ethan Mutschler pleads guilty

The driver the car that crashed into a vehicle driven by Wayland High School senior Ethan Mutschler has pleased guilty in Kent County court to reckless driving causing death.

Colter Brannon Rounds is believed to be facing one year in Kent County jail and five years probation in his sentencing Jan. 30.

The crash occurred last July 12 after Mutschler, who was preparing for his fourth varsity football season, had stopped at the intersection on 92nd Avenue and Wilson Avenue. When he proceeded across Wilson, his car was struck on the driver’s side by Rounds’ Volvo, which authorities determined had exceeded 95 mph on southbound Wilson Avenue seconds before colliding with Mutschler’s Ford Taurus.

The speed limit there is 55 mph.

Mutschler, who died at the scene, was a standout offensive and defensive lineman for the Wildcat football team, stood at 6-7 and weighed more than 250 pounds. He also was being counted on as a starter for the Wayland varsity basketball squad.
