A U.S. Postal Service worker from Martin died Monday just after noon on 10th Street between between 107th and 110th Avenues after a truck hit the vehicle while it was delivering mail.

Emergency responders said when they arrived at the scene, the Postal Service vehicle was in the ditch on fire next to the road. The postal worker was found inside the vehicle after the flames were put out and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased driver of the postal service vehicle was identified as Sheila Gay Rackley, a 55-year-old female from the Martin area who worked out of the Plainwell Post Office.

Allegan County Sheriff’s authorities said, “Due to the possibility of charges being issued in this case, the name of the pickup driver will not be released until a decision is made by the prosecutor’s office when the investigation is complete.”

Investigators say the truck was going south in Gun Plains Township on 10th Street when it struck the back of the Postal Service vehicle.

Authorities said they do not believe alcohol was involved.
