Potawatomi citizen David Wesaw dies at age 75

David Francis Wesaw died Monday, Jan. 5 less than a month after observing his 75th birthday.

He was a citizen of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. His greatest joy was praying the rosary. He loved wearing his scapular and praying his Pieta Prayer Book.

Dave always was happy, especially when he would receive Vienna sausages and flavored Tic Tacs. Dave was the family’s prayer warrior; he held each one in his prayers and in his heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Sr. and Viola Wesaw, and siblings Lawrence, Daniel (Mini), Martin Jr. (Sonny), Sylvester, Lois, JoEllen, and Mary.

He is survived by his siblings Jean, Carl (Kelly), Carolyn, Catherine, Elizabeth (Jeff) Harris, Gregory, and Teresa, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, with visitation prior to the service starting at 9 a.m., at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 9408 Wilson Ave SW, Byron Center. Monsignor William Duncan will be the celebrant. Interment at Bradley Indian Mission Cemetery.
