Private service planned for Phyllis Hall-Hartwell, 80

Phyllis L. Hall-Hartwell, age 80, of Wayland, died Monday, March 14.

Phyllis was born Oct. 13, 1941, at home in Muskegon County, one of 13 children born to Roy and Elizabeth Shue. Phyllis married Fred Hall on Feb. 25, 1957. They were married for 27 years and had eight children before Fred’s death on May 4, 1984. After Fred’s passing, Phyllis married Leon Hartwell on Aug. 3, 1985, and together they enjoyed more than 14 years of marriage until Leon’s death on March 17, 2000.

Phyllis was a CNA for 25 years and worked at Laurels of Sandy Creek of Wayland, Metron of Allegan, and Railside Assisted Living of Byron Center. She loved to garden and can food, with her freezer jam being a family favorite. All of her family enjoyed her homemade cooking and baking. Phyllis collected angels, loved her old country music, and dearly loved her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Tim (Angie) Hall, Mark Hall, Kevin (Tammie) Hall, Tersa (Ken) Sparks, Dawn (Ben) Kraft, Shelly (Emilio) Badalamenti; 25 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; two sisters, Dorothy Shook and Doris Stiles; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husbands, Phyllis was preceded in death by two of her children, Darin J. Hall and Sherry Lee Hall; a grandson, Mark Hall; a great grandson, Caleb Duley; and ten siblings.

As Phyllis requested, cremation has taken place, and her cremains will be laid to rest at Elmwood Cemetery in Wayland. Private family services will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

  1. So sorry to hear about the passing of Phyllis. She was always looking out for my mom when they lived in the same apartment complex, I remember my mother always said Phyllis was a good cook and she always made sure to make something for my mom. RIP Phyllis
