Public Safety Beat: Fire damages barn; boom is ‘freeze quake’

A couple of incidents over the weekend and Monday morning had Wayland and Dorr area people buzzing.

A damaged a barn in the 100 block of 131st Avenue in Wayland Township Monday morning. Authorities from four area fire departments indicated it began with a piece of construction equipment just before 7:30 a.m., when a Bobcat was charging and caught fire.

There were no reports of huge losses of animals, except for a few chickens.

Over the weekend, a very loud boom was heard in the Dorr area, and after a lot of speculation of Facebook, it was believed it was the result of “freeze quake” created when ice expands beyond its structure under the ground.
