Authorities have reported a van crashed through two mailboxes and then into a house Monday afternoon in Leighton Township north of Wayland.
The van, driven by an elderly woman who was not identified, was traveling on 146th Avenue.
It was reported that the home was unoccupied at the time of the incident and there were no serious injuries. The driver was being treated at an area hospital.
Deputies and first responders from the Leighton Township Fire Department were summo0ned to the scene at about 1:45 p.m. The vehicle involved had left the roadway after the driver, who was wearing a surgical boot on her right foot, explained that the boot got caught on the accelerator, Allegan County Sheriff’s authorities said.
The driver stated she was unable to slow the vehicle and drove off the road and the vehicle ended up crashing into a residence. The driver, a 61-year-old woman from the Wayland area, did not appear to be injured seriously; however, she was transported to the hospital for evaluation.
The Dorr Fire Department was dispatched to assist with extricating the driver from her vehicle, which came to a stop, inside the family room of the home.
Wayland Area Ambulance was also on scene and took the victim to a Grand Rapids Hospital. Consumers Energy and Michigan Gas Utilities were also sent to assist with a power line and gas line issue due to the crash.
The homeowner was contacted by a deputy to tell them someone crashed into the, however, did not report to the scene right away. The homeowner thought it was a prank call at first.
