Reilly Brower hired as interim Dorr Library Director

The Dorr Township Library Board Monday night approved Assistant Library Director Reilly Brower as interim library director.

Brower succeeds Jeffery Babbitt, who abruptly resigned last month. Jennifer Chamberlain also was approved to be the interim Assistant Library Director.

Brower told the board that the resignation was a clean break for the library staff.  However, she also discovered that some duties were not being performed.  Most notably was an unemployment report that has not been filed with the state for the past two years.  They are now working quickly to get in compliance with the state reporting requirements.

The task in finding a permanent library director will be a challenge.  The compensation package of pay and paid time off is inadequate for most library director candidates.

The idea of having Brower and Chamberlain be co-directors was proposed.  Trustee Michael Rydman said he did not think it was a good idea, but was open for them to try it out.  The board wanted input from Carol Dawe, of the Lakeland Library Co-op.  The matter was tabled until they could discuss it with Dawe.

In other business, the Library Board:

  • Approved a plan to get in compliance with the Earn Sick Time Act (ERSA).  The plan would front-load PTO time at the beginning of the calendar year.  By front-loading, keeping track of the PTO is made easier, rather than figuring when someone earns PTO time during the year.
  • Larned a network switch failed at the library. There is currently a temporary fix in place. The board was presented options to upgrade the network over time, or to do it all right now. President Carrie Brooks said that she would, “rather be proactive, than reactive.”  The board decided to table the matter until the next meeting.  They will invite their network provider to the meeting to help explain their options.
