A local insurance business is supposed to be observing its 100th year in downtown Wayland, but it’s actually 101 years old.

The discrepancy was caused by a Wayland Globe report in 1970 that claimed the Reno Insurance Co. was marking its 50th year in business in Wayland. L.P. Reno was the founder in 1919 and son, Phillip, who was first mayor of the city in 1967, joined the firm in 1933. Son and daughter-in-law Dennis and Mary Reno was the third generation with the firm.

Today the Reno Agency staff includes President Mike Salisbury and agents Shelly Whitley, Joe Buffin, Merrie Smith and Matt Miner. All but Buffin are graduates of Wayland High School.
